Sony sets up a studio for filming its own games

Sony starts its own production studio for filming Playstation games. The game publisher mainly wants to film their own exclusives, which can be published both as a series and for the big screen.

This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter, who spoke with the directors of the studio. The production company will be called PlayStation Productions and will be led by Asad Qizilbash and Shawn Layden. They do not yet give details about which titles will be filmed, but the new studio can at least draw on a large number of titles such as God of War, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid and The Last of Us. The game series Uncharted is already being filmed. Director Shawn Levy left that project at the end of last year; that baton was picked up at the beginning of this year by Dan Trachtenberg.

Sony says it will focus primarily on filming productions from its own catalog. “We have 25 years of experience with game development and therefore we have great games, franchises and stories,” says Layden. “Now is the right time to watch other media such as streaming, film and television.” Sony indicates that it would prefer to produce its own content instead of selling copyright to other studios. According to Asad Qizilbash, it is determined per title whether it is more suitable for film or television.
