Nokia has a new low-end device, above the extremely cheap Nokia 1 with Android Go. The Nokia 2.2 must provide all the benefits of Android One, with low-end specifications.
HMD Global has since the beginning indicated that it wants to stand for a clean version of Android. In the first year, this simply meant a clean version of Android, while since 2018 it has managed to profile itself as one of the largest manufacturers of Android One devices. The range is in some cases difficult to follow due to the rapid launch of new products. Fortunately, the Finnish company started fairly quietly in 2019. On Thursday, the company showed the Nokia 2.2 for the first time, one of the cheapest Android One devices on the market. At the same time, the device gets a software and hardware experience that you would expect only with high-end devices.
Low-end Nokia 2.2
Internally you naturally get low-end parts, it is clear that the Snapdragon 855 will not take place here. For the Nokia 2.2, HMD Global has opted for MediaTek chips . To be precise, this is the Helio A22 SoC with four ARM Cortex-A53 clocked at 2.0GHz. Together with the SoC there is 2 or 3 GB RAM, with 16 or 32 GB storage memory respectively. You can also expand the storage memory via a microSD card of up to 400GB. The battery in the Nokia 2.2 has a capacity of 3,000 mAh and can be charged via the microUSB port. In terms of internal specifications, it is a normal low-end telephone.
From the outside, you naturally look at a screen. HMD has opted for a 5.7-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 720 x 1,520 (HD +). In the notch at the top of the device you will find a 5MP sensor, on the back there is a single 13MP sensor, great for everyday photos. However, what makes the device so special is the software: Android One. Where with most low-end devices you may be happy to receive updates at all, the Nokia 2.2 will receive updates for at least three years. Google’s guidelines state that at least two version upgrades must be made (Q and R), as well as three years of security patches.
Prices and availability
The back of the device is made of plastic ‘Nokia Xpress covers’ that you can easily remove. Therefore you could easily provide the device with a new color in the future. Speaking of colors, the Nokia 2.2 appears in Pink Sand, Ice Blue and Forest Green. The device will receive a suggested retail price of 119 euros with its release in mid-June. HMD has not yet released a precise date for the disclosure. Prices of the covers are also unknown. Interesting detail of the cover: the latest Android One logo is also present.
