Mastercard may intend to start its own cryptocurrency wallet service. This is apparent from several vacancies posted on the Mastercard website on 2 August.
The vacancies are for the following four positions:
Senior Engineer, Blockchain
Director, Product Development & Innovation – Blockchain Solutions Architect
VP, Product Management – Blockchain / Crypto
Director, Product Management – Crypto Currency / Wallets.
According to the vacancies, the future directors would lead their own team that focuses on the development of blockchain technology, including a cryptocurrency wallet.
However, there are no further details about future projects in the vacancies. It is therefore as yet unknown what the scale of these projects is and which cryptocurrencies will be supported by the wallet, for example.
Mastercard is part of the Libra Association, a consortium of companies set up by Facebook for the development of Facebook’s own cryptocurrency: Libra. It is not clear whether the crypto wallet from Mastercard is intended for Libra. Facebook is currently developing its own wallet with the Calibra company.
