Electronic Arts encourages investing in “Crypto” with marketing stunt

Electronic Arts (EA), the video game giant, suddenly urged people on Twitter to invest in cryptocurrency on September 19.

At least that seemed to be the case at first. Instead, it turned out to be a marketing stunt for the game Apex Legends. In October a new character is added to that game called Crypto.

EA was, of course, aware of the dual meaning. The twitter message now has almost 20,000 favorites and 10,000 retweets. There was even a rumor that the Twitter account had been hacked. Also, crypto-currency exchange Binance responded to the Twitter message:

So, in the end, it had nothing to do with cryptocurrency and the disappointment among a number of people on Twitter seems huge. Entering a giant company such as EA, responsible for games such as Battlefield, Fifa, Need for Speed and The Sims, in the cryptocurrency market could, therefore, have had a major impact. The world of gaming is more often seen as the next step for this market since some games would be suitable for applying blockchain technology, especially when it comes to so-called microtransactions.

For those interested in the game: the Crypto character will be part of the third season of Apex Legends and will be available from October 1. You can watch a new trailer for the game here:
